Curriculum Overview
Summer Term - Year 6 Hamstel Histories and a Geographical Enquiry

English | This term we are creating a Writer’s Portfolio showcasing all of the writing skills that the children have learned in the juniors. Our writing pieces will each be based on a stimulus and will include include short story narratives, setting description, instructions and letter writing. |
Maths | This term will be exploring angles on a line, around a point and in shapes. We will find the radius and diameter in circles. We will also be understanding and interpret graphs and charts. We will also be exploring positions and movement of points on a quadrant grid. We will continue to develop our problem solving and reasoning skills. |
Science | This term we are becoming nature scientists. We will be conducting an enquiry about the wildlife at Hamstel School and observing this over time. Alongside this, the children will learn about the give kingdoms of living things, learn to classify both animals and plants and devise and use a classification key. |
Computing | This term, we will be exploring the concept of variables in programming through games in Scratch; relate them to real-world examples of values that can be set and changed and then use variables to create a simulation of a scoreboard. The children will apply the skills that they have learnt to create their own project. |
Art | This term, we will be studying Pablo Picasso's well-known collection of self-portraits. The children will be delving into the artistic form of avant-garde cubism and learning all about the evolution of Picasso's work. They will then use their artist research to portray his style of work by creating their own series of self-portraits, experimenting with a range of mixed media. |
Geography | We will be carrying out an enquiry into the location of Southend United’s current ground. We will look at impact of the current ground and hypothesise about good alternative locations. We will investigate the move of the ground to an alternative location. |
Music | We will be learning and rehearsing the songs for our end of year production |
PE | We will be learning the skills of cricket including bowling, batting and fielding. We will also develop our performance in athletics; running, jumping, throwing and relay. We will be choreographing and learning a dance for performance at the end of the term. |
PSHE | This term we will explore different ways of managing change. We will think about and describe how it might feel to move to secondary school and how friendships may change and how to deal with this.

RE | This term we will be exploring how religions and other ways of thinking can help us explore ultimate questions, such as ‘Why are we here?’ and ‘Why should we be nice to others’ |
